Obesity Statistics: are you destined to be one?

According to obesity statistics the obesity epidemic is the number two leading cause of preventable death in the United States, and it continues to gain on tobacco use the number one cause. Obesity related deaths are preventable and avoidable. It is of utmost importance that people do all they can to combat the obesity epidemic. Diseases like hypertension, coronary heart disease, or even strokes and more can be the result of obesity. As the rate of obesity increases we see a decrease in the average life span of Americans.

There are several theories proposed as to why there has been such an increase in obesity. Some of these theories make more sense than others.

Technology, it has been suggested, has lead to a more sedentary lifestyle due to the ease of getting everyday tasks accomplished . A good way to counter this is to walk or ride a bicycle for short errands. If you need to research something maybe take a walk to the library. Consider taking five or ten minutes of every hour spent sitting at the computer to do some exercise.

Another possible cause of the increased obesity statistics is the increased availability of unhealthy foods. Store shelves are stocked with loads of processed foods and foods loaded with sugar. There is also the large number of fast food establishments in every area. As an alternative consider cooking a good wholesome meal at home for your family. If you need to go the fast food route make the right choices a salad is a good choice if you realize you do not need the entire pack of dressing.

According to obesity research genetics to may play more of a role in obesity than previously thought. It is unfortunate that it is quite a bit tougher for some to lose weight than others. While a predisposition for obesity exists this can not be used as an excuse to give up. Try to stay motivated the fight may be harder for you but the victory against obesity will be all the more sweeter. Solicit the help of a loved one, they will be happy to help see you extend your life.

These are just a few tips that may help combat the obesity epidemic. Try to implement them in to your life. Start with just one day a week don’t let yourself become an obesity statistic.
