When you receive the Seal you will begin to understand the value of life. A new study confirms just how you can lengthen your own life--quit smoking, eat more fruits and vegetables, exercise, and drink moderately.
For 4 years in the mid-1990s, researchers polled 20,000 people in the UK. They asked them about their lifestyles and also took blood samples to find out how much fruits and vegetables they were eating.
The subjects were both men and women, from 45 years old to 79, and they were each scored on a scale of 0 to 4. 0 was the lowest for the people with no healthy habits, 4 was for people doing everything healthy.
The researchers found that the people with a score of 0--having no healthy habits--were 4 times as likely to have ended up dead. And the main cause of that death would be heart disease.
And they found that a person with a score of 4 could live 14 years longer before they had the same likelihood of dying that a person with a score of 0 had. So these healthy habits could generally add 14 years to your life.
Quitting smoking has the most impact on your health of all the behaviors. According to the American Lung Association, it takes 8 hours after your last cigarette for your blood oxygen level to become normal again.
But just 24 hours after your last cigarette, your chance of having a heart attack already decreases. And only 2 days after you last smoked, you will be able to taste and smell things much more.
In a few months you will be able to walk easier and your blood will circulate better. After a year your smoker's risk of heart disease is cut in half. In 5 or more years your stroke risk is as if you had never smoked.
10 years later your chance of getting lung cancer can be 50 percent of that of smokers. And finally, 15 years after you quit smoking, your chance of dying is no greater than people who have never smoked.
Fruits and vegetables are the next important habit you need to adopt to lengthen your life. They contain many nutrients like phytochemicals and enzymes to properly nourish your body and ward off the common diseases like cancer and heart disease.
Exercise cuts your risk of dying from heart disease and getting diabetes, high blood pressure, and cancer. And there are emotional benefits. Exercise lessens depression and anxiety and stimulates feelgood hormones in the body.
Exercise will raise your good HDL cholesterol and lower your bad LDL cholesterol. It will help you lose weight and keep it off. It will help you sleep better. And as you grow older, exercise will help your stamina so you can stay active.
Moderate drinking (among older people) can reduce risk of heart attack and high blood pressure. Moderate drinking also fights oxidative stress in the body, protecting you from the bad effects of eating a meal high in fat.
When you are sealed you will come to know how precious life is. God will show that to you. So you will begin to take care of your own body to extend your life if possible.
God gives life to people and does not enjoy taking life away from anyone. You will come to understand the value of your own life and its purpose (and want to lengthen it) when you receive the Seal.
