The concept of training to failure has been popular in the world of bodybuilding during the past few years. Training to failure means that you repeat a strength training exercise until you are unable to do it any more. For example, you lift a weight continually until your muscles physically cannot lift it again--and you fail. Why is this problematic? Many bodybuilding experts believe that is it essential to train to failure if you want to make large increases in your muscle.

Recently, however, I've read articles written by accomplished bodybuilders who urge others, particularly those just beginning, to train to one repetition before failure. At first, in order to grasp his limits, the individual in training exercises to failure, but, once he is aware of them, the goal is to stop one repetition prior to failure. According to trainers Kevin Dye and Jason Ferrugia, regularly training to failure has the potential to exhaust both your central nervous system and your immune system, and both of these areas will take longer to recover than your muscles will. At your next session, you would be less likely to be fully recovered, therefore your muscle fibers will not have had the opportunity to rebuild. To see why this is important, remember the basics of building muscle. When building muscle, the individual has to push the muscle past its previous limits. This leads the muscle to grow in strength since the body doesn't intend to be placed under that same stress again. However, this muscle growth occurs outside of the gym in the recovery phase. The muscle fibers rebuild and grow in strength while you sleep, but only as long as your body is receiving enough calories and protein. Dye and Ferrugia say, Your advancement may be limited by repeated muscular exercises and slowed recuperation.

For a person who is not advancing in their bodybuilding regimen, these suggestions are worth looking into even though they may not agree with accepted practices.
