I know I know, the reason you get so sleepy after a Thanksgiving feast is all that tryptophan in the bird. So its safe to assume if you took the big bird out of the meal you would have boundless energy for hours right... wrong.
The real reason behind your drowsiness is a combination of things.
Overindulging: rule #6 of supportive nutrition-never fill up. When your stomach is full, blood is directed away from other organ systems, including your nervous system. The result? Nighty night, and then you miss Detroit no doubt losing once again on turkey day. I am a loyal Lions fan so all Lions fans will appreciate my negativity.
Relaxation: Although many people find the holidays stressful, the most relaxing part of the festivities is likely to be the meal. No matter what you may have been doing throughout the day, Thanksgiving dinner provides an opportunity to sit back and relax -- a feeling that can carry over after the meal.
Alcohol: in short it will put you to sleep; alcohol is a central nervous system depressant. If you missed my column on alcohol and fat loss a couple months back be sure to email me and request a copy.
Fats: all those fats slow down the digestive system. Fats also take a lot of energy to digest, so the body will redirect blood to your digestive system to tackle the job. Since you have less blood flow elsewhere, you will feel less energetic after eating a meal rich in fats.
You know what the best part of eating supportively would be in regards to Thanksgiving? Turkey dinner for my two breakfasts, my two lunches and my two dinners. Try everything in moderation... every three hours.
Have a happy healthy and safe Day.
