Has anyone ever told you that you were picky or a fussy eater? I know I have said that a few times to my family. So what makes us so fussy or picky about our food? When it comes to weight loss is there a correlation between the two?
Most people that are picky eaters have a keen sense of smell and taste. Certain foods can also carry with them memories from childhood. That is why more often than not, an adult picky eater has developed this as a learned behavior from childhood. If you came from a home where parents were excessively concerned with food (both positive and negative), your chances are much higher that you will be a picky eaters. Parents that cater to their children and only serve those foods the child requests tend to aggravate the problem.
There has been some discussion that a picky eater may have a neurological problem. Testing shows that finicky eaters tend to score higher on OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) tests.
The cause of picky eating is complex and varies. * Some adults were super-tasters as children and continued this behavior on into adulthood. * Others carry memories from childhood that associates food with a power struggle. * Picky eaters can be people that are very cautious and refuse to adventure out of their comfort zone. * Picky eating can also be a symbol of independence. They will even pay the price of social embarrassment to make their point.
While many children that are picky eaters tend to be underweight, those that continue this pattern into adulthood have higher than average body mass indexes and are often overweight or obese.
So naturally the next question to ask, if you are overweight, could one of the reasons for this be that you a picky eater? You can make a decision to change and changing this one area of your life can have tremendous health benefits.
