When considering what type of fencing shoes are right for you, it is best to first decide what you need most in a shoe. Because each person's feet are slightly different than everyone else's, the most important attribute to you may not be the important to another fencer. You should also consider how much money you are willing to spend.

When fencing, you need a lightweight, flat rubber soled shoe so you will have balance and good traction. These shoes also need a sturdy soft material as a lining so that you can keep traction on the inside as well as the outside. The lining of a street shoe would wear out quickly with all the lunging that occurs while fencing, so make sure that your fencing shoe has a durable material such as suede in them.

There are two varieties of fencing shoes, high top variety and low top variety. It's up to the person who is going to use them, to choose between these varieties. However, most fencers prefer low top variety, and some prefer high top variety for ankle support.

There are two differing opinions about what kind of shoes are best when fencing. Some experts believe that a lightweight shoe give you more freedom in you movements. While others believe that a heavy shoe will help to build your muscles. Some fencers switch from a heavier shoe while training to a lightweight shoe for matches.

In some stores you will be able to find fencing shoes in the $60-$80 range, which is fairly inexpensive. However, if you are looking long lasting shoes, with good support, these can run as much as $200 at a fencing supply store. Fencing supplies can be found in some sporting goods stores, but the best selection is available online.

Many fencers these days are actually opting for boxing shoes, which can be altered slightly to have the same qualities as fencing shoes. Boxing shoes tend to be lighter and less costly then fencing shoes. With boxing shoes, you will need to add a gel insert to soften impact on joints and feet, and also heel cups for anyone that has or develops issues with shin splints.
