Kidneys have to function round the clock to keep us fit and fine. The only disorder that affects them drastically is, renal calculi or kidney stones. Crystals form within the kidney. These crystals are formed from chemicals binding together. Sometimes the crystal is so tiny that it can’t be seen by the naked eye. Other times it maybe about 5mm in diameter, or even more. There have been cases when stones the size of a golf ball has been found.

Reason for Formation of Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are a disease that can be passed on from our ancestors. Sometimes you may have a body, which produces too much uric, or amino acid and this leads to the formation of stone.

Life and lifestyle too are very vital factors. If you are a couch potato with too little activity and drink very little water, you have very high chances of getting kidney stones. Urinary tract infection and the medicines to cure it also affect the kidneys and can form stones.

Intake of lot of milk or a calcium rich diet can cause renal calculi. Vitamin C and D too are factors that are cause to worry. If the intake of anything in excess it can affect us, the deficiency is equally harmful too. Some people stop drinking milk, as they fear that they might accumulate excess calcium. If the body doesn’t get milk, it increases the production of oxalate, which also causes formation of stones.

Symptoms of Kidney Stone

Since this disorder is common, it is vital that you should know the symptoms too. Cramps are accompanied with nausea and vomiting. The cramps may last for a few minutes or up to few hours at times. The pain is normally in the abdomen, lower back, under the ribs or in the groin. Blood in the urine is another major clue that your kidney has stones.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Kidney Stones

If you have all the symptoms don’t jump to conclusions on your own. When it comes to your health, nobody can judge it better than your doctor. Visit your doctor regularly. He will ask you take an x-ray. An X-ray itself can detect most of the stones. If not, the doctor will ask you to take a scan. Stones, once detected will give an idea about your situation, to the doctor. He then will decide on which type of treatment for kidney stones will best suit your case.

Drinking a lot of water washes away most of these stone forming chemicals. Stones that are small in size are washed away in the urine itself. The bigger ones may have to be removed surgically or have to be broken up into smaller bits.

A strict diet must be followed when you are diagnosed with stones and your intake of water should be a minimum of twelve glasses per day. It is very rare that the doctor will give you medicines to dissolve kidney stone. If you are taking medicines, then complete the course and follow a strict diet and drink nearly three liters of water.

Stones can be treated with ease and so don’t delay the treatment process. Those who have hereditary kidney stones cannot rid themselves completely but you can reduce the occurrence and size of the stones by leading a healthy life and drinking a lot of water.
