The pets particularly dogs are frequently infected by the common disease called ringworm. ‘Ringworm’ may sound like a sort of worm but it is a fungus indeed known as Dermatophyte, which grows well on the surface of dead skin tissues and spreads the infection by taking up a circular course.

Our pets get infected with ringworm from the near by kennels, rodent burrows or from other infected animals. Nearly 34 geneses of ringworms are found to infect pet dogs. ‘Mircosporum Canis’ is the most common species which spreads more from among these.

The infected dogs will seem to have a lesion on their skin that spreads rapidly in a circular manner with patches of hair removed. It may resemble an inflamed scar and may also have flakes similar to dandruff. It can be seen frequently on the face, tips of ear, paws and tail.

If one finds such symptoms on one’s pet, it has to be brought to the attention of veterinarian. He may examine the hair by plucking it and observing under the ultraviolet light and diagnose the presence of the fungi. If the trace of micro-organism is found he may prescribe anti fungal tablets or some salves.

As the ringworm is an infectious disease, the humans should be more cautious. Children should not be permitted near the infected animal. Even adults need to wear gloves when handling the dog or anything used or touched by the infected animal. Dogs should be kept dirt free and tidy by clipping its hair shot for hygienic causes.

Ringworm is not a serious disorder but since it’s a communicable disease is and the delay in recovery is another worrying cause, pets which are infected must be taken to vet and then kept a little away from all humans.
